Josh Boone Still Has Hope That 'New Mutants' Is The First Film In A Trilogy

The thing about the upcoming superhero film, “The New Mutants,” that makes it so interesting isn’t the plot of the movie but the drama that surrounds the production. Numerous delays, proposed reshoots that never happened, and a big studio acquisition are much more intriguing than what appears to be a pretty typical teen horror film with an ‘X-Men’ label attached. But filmmaker Josh Boone has big hopes for the film and is ready for the new film to spawn a franchise, even if it seems destined for “one and done” status.

Speaking to SFX Magazine (via ComicBook.com), Boone discussed why he’s happy to finally have his version of “New Mutants” ready for the big screen and his hopes for the future.

“Ultimately, after all this time, I was able to make MY New Mutants film, and I’m am proud of it,” Boone said. “What I’m hoping for now is that it will be successful enough so the studio will allow me to complete a trilogy. I’ve got all planned out.”

“The New Mutants” is a film based on the Marvel Comics property about a group of teenage heroes that begin to develop their mutant powers while being held captive in some sort of twisted hospital. When the film was given the green light, it’s clear that Fox envisioned “The New Mutants” as some sort of YA superhero franchise in the making.

As mentioned, “The New Mutants” has been plagued by numerous behind-the-scenes issues since the film finished its principal photography. This has forced the film to sit on the shelf since 2017, with no one really sure about what was going to happen. Eventually, studios were purchased and now Disney has given Boone the ability to deliver whatever film he wants, with the idea being that maybe Fox’s last-ditch attempt at an ‘X-Men’ spin-off will catch on and make some profit.

Of course, the Marvel Studios shadow looms over all of this discussion, as it’s clear that Kevin Feige and his studio has plans for the ‘X-Men’ characters and those plans probably don’t involve “The New Mutants.” So, even if the film makes $1 billion at the box office, will it spawn a trilogy? Likely not. But hey, at least if it does really well, Josh Boone will have the last laugh.

As of now, “The New Mutants” is scheduled to be released on August 28. But as I always say when it comes to this film, I’ll believe it when I see it.
