'Zack Snyder's Justice League' Will Reportedly Cost $70 Million To Produce

Back in May, after the world was told that Zack Snyder’s original vision for “Justice League” would be coming to HBO Max in 2021, dubbed “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” aka “The Snyder Cut,” it was reported that the cost of going back into production and finishing up the cut that already existed would cost upwards of $30 million. That seemed like a huge number for Warner Bros. to pay just to have Snyder’s superhero vision fulfilled. However, according to a new report, that $30 million number wasn’t even close to the final tally. In fact, it was way off.

According to The Wrap, with Snyder expected to go into production on reshoots that include the entire original “Justice League” cast soon, for at least a week of shooting, the cost of the new “Justice League” miniseries (the film is being split over four chapters/episodes) is somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 million. Yes, that’s more than double the original estimate.

We already knew the original total didn’t cover the entire cost, as an interview with the head of HBO Max said so much. During that interview, Bob Greenblatt said, “I’ll just say I wish it was just $30 million and stop there. It’s an enormous undertaking and very complex.”

Now, $30 million is not small budget, and enough to fund three indies. But $70 million? Hell, there have been entire superhero movies made for way less than that. Films such as “Joker,” “Deadpool,” and the recent “New Mutants” all have reported budgets less than $70 million. Clearly, WB has confidence that “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” is an investment that will pay off with huge numbers of HBO Max subscriptions, but even still, that’s just a really high amount of money for something that is, in essence, a Director’s Cut.

But then again, if WB releases a version of The Snyder Cut with the director having to make any sort of concessions, then it would be seen as a failure since the whole point is to let Zack Snyder go wild. And as we’ve seen with his previous films, Snyder doesn’t work on cheap films.
