Justin Lin's Young Child Came Up With The Idea For The Magnetic Plane Stunt In 'F9'

Often, when you’re watching a new ‘Fast and Furious’ film, you will see whatever outlandish action is happening on screen and think to yourself, “Who the hell comes up with this stuff?” Well, in the case of the magnetic airplane from the upcoming “F9,” the answer is a nine-year-old kid. Literally.

According to an interview with Empire, filmmaker Justin Lin, who directs the new ‘Fast and Furious film, aptly titled “F9,” explained that his son, Oqwe, was visiting him while he had to do meetings for the film. And during one of those meetings, they’re brainstorming an action set-piece when the young boy comes up with an idea that ended up working its way into the film.

“We decided we were going to do magnets and everything [in ‘F9’], and it was exciting – we were coming up with these set-pieces and stuff,” Lin said. “We were in London for a week, and I had my son Oqwe with me, and the only way we could hang out was that he would come the meetings with me.”

He added, “We were talking about the ravine [set-piece] and I said, ‘Alright, so here’s Roman and Tej. Jakob needs to get to the other side – how does he get there?’ And Oqwe just picked it up and pitched the idea of the plane and everything. After us spending hundreds of hours on planning, I guess he was paying attention, and he understood the characters.”

So, there you have it. When you watch “F9” and you see the scene of a plane magnetically carrying a car across a ravine, you are watching the ideas of a young child brought to life in a $200 million film. Honestly, with the trajectory of the franchise, Universal really should have young Oqwe on retainer to help craft the action in the rest of the films that are still to come.

“F9” arrives in theaters on June 25. You can see a glimpse of the plane scene in the trailer below:
