Kevin Feige Says 'Young Avengers' Could Happen As Long As The Characters "Build Their Audience"

Marvel Studios wrapped up its “Infinity Saga” with 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” And with that, the book has been closed on some of the MCU founding fathers, including Robert Downey, Jr’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America. And in their place, it appears that Phase 4 of the MCU is setting up a new generation of heroes, with comic book fans thinking there might be a “Young Avengers” project in the works. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, that’s a possibility, but nothing he’s willing to bank on just yet.

Speaking to EW, Feige talked about all of the new characters being introduced in Phase 4 and the fan speculation that he’s somehow setting up “Young Avengers.” For the comic book uninitiated, “Young Avengers” is a fairly recent comics run that focused on a new generation of young heroes that have ties to the original Avengers. And many of those characters from the “Young Avengers” comics are being introduced or already have been introduced in the MCU over the next couple of years. We have Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in “Hawkeye,” Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) in “Doctor Strange int the Multiverse of Madness,” and the twins, Billy and Tommy (Julian Hilliard and Jett Klyne, respectively), from “WandaVision.”

Let’s also not forget the potential for a Spider-Man, either Tom Holland’s Peter Parker or another actor’s eventual Miles Morales, Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), and Ms. Marvel (Iman Velani) to show up, even though they weren’t featured in the source material. Needless to say, the seeds are being planted, but will we ever see the “Young Avengers” come to fruition?

“As a comic fan, anything in the comics is always our inspiration and our guide point,” explained Feige. “How those things come together and in what shape, it’s always subverting expectations, it’s always half the fun as meeting them. But, yes, you can certainly see that Phase 4 is introducing all sorts of new types of characters with the potential being endless.”

He added, “Now, all of us at Marvel Studios feel like Nick Fury at the end of ‘Iron Man 1,’ as new actors and new performers come in, and we tell them they’re part of a bigger universe. They just now have to do the work required to build their audience. I’m happy to say, everybody that’s here, certainly where I’m sitting now, is doing amazing work, and [I] can’t wait to show them the world.”

Basically, Feige says that he’ll only supply “Young Avengers” as long as the demand is there for it. Obviously, Step 1 of introducing the twins in “WandaVision” worked well. And with Scarlet Witch showing up in ‘Doctor Strange 2’ opposite America Chavez, there’s plenty of opportunities to bring those kids back in another way. You have to assume that the rest of those projects will succeed because Marvel Studios does nothing but release crowd-pleasers.

All that to say, though Feige isn’t going to confirm anything, let’s assume “Young Avengers,” in one form or another, is definitely on the horizon. It has to be.
