Eddie Murphy Says ‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’ Is Still In Development But Won’t Do It “Until The Script Is Right”

A few years ago, it was revealed that Eddie Murphy was going to finish up “Dolemite is My Name” and then move onto two massive fan-favorites, a sequel to “Coming to America” and a fourth “Beverly Hills Cop.” Well, as you already know, “Coming 2 America” was recently released by Amazon, but there hasn’t been much word on whether or not “Beverly Hills Cop 4” is still happening. Murphy recently updated the next Axel Foley adventure’s status, but he’s still not guaranteeing that it’s going to happen.

Speaking to “Desus & Mero,” Murphy was asked about the status of “Beverly Hills Cop 4.” The last we heard, the film was set up with Netflix, and it seemed like everything was moving along well. According to Murphy, the film is still in the early stages of development with a script not even locked in.

“They’ve been trying to make another ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ for 15 years now,” said Murphy. “Right now, Netflix has it, and they’re trying to develop a script. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing next. But, I’m not doing nothing until the script is right.”

Obviously, it would be silly to think that Netflix wouldn’t figure out how to make “Beverly Hills Cop 4” a thing. And clearly, Murphy isn’t afraid to dust off an old comedy of his and sequelize it if it feels right. So, don’t count a new ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ feature just yet. It just might take a bit more time.

The fourth film in the franchise isn’t the only time that Murphy and studios have tried to continue the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise since the third film hit theaters in 1994. There was a CBS series reboot that was going to be made that would follow Axel Murphy’s son. That series was eventually passed on, and honestly, probably for the best.

So, for now, we’ll just have to wait for the right script to come along before Eddie Murphy suits up for a new “Beverly Hills Cop” feature. Then we can all fight about whether or not it should be R-rated.
