Got a Tip?

Lars Von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac’ Will Run 5 Hours Long, TV Spinoff Series Possibly In The Works

“… after 268 script pages, 11 weeks of shooting and with 100 hours of material it would have been [a race] to finish the two films in time for [Cannes],” producer and CEO of Zentropa Entertainments Peter Aalbæk Jensen said earlier this year when it surfaced that Lars Von Trier‘s epic sexytime saga “Nymphomaniac” wouldn’t be hitting the Cannes Film Festival. And indeed, with the movie gearing up for a Christmas release in Denmark, it still hasn’t surfaced at any festivals, instead opting for a careful marketing plan that has seen a new teaser for the movie arrive each month. But some new tidbits about the movie have emerged and they continue to prove that there is nothing predictable about the film.

The good folks over at Norwegian site Montages have revealed some exclusive details about the movie, which should prove intriguing for those eagerly awaiting the film. The first item of note, is that the two-part “Nymphomaniac” will run five hours in total, with each part running two-and-a-half hours. And if you think that’s all Lars Von Trier has to say in his tale about one woman’s sexual journey, there are apparently tentative plans “to add a TV series to the theatrically released films.” Uh, wow, that’s certainly something we weren’t expecting.

Stylistically, the film will find Von Trier utilizing a variety of techniques across the eight-chapter story, including: extensive use of archival footage; one chapter being shot entirely with a static camera; no use of slow motion and Cinemascope for all except one, that will be in 1.85:1.

Lastly, the decades spanning story, which starts in the ’60s, is said to be closer to “pure comedy” in the vein of “The Boss Of It All” and “The Idiots,” at least early on, before the material gets darker towards the second half.

Ultimately? We really can’t wait. So c’mon Magnolia Pictures, give us a stateside release date already. And be sure to head to Montages for more details.
