In a piece of A24 corporate synergy, “Eighth Grade” star Elsie Fisher and “Minari” star Alan S. Kim will be joining forces for a new dark comedy “Latchkey Kids.”
According to Variety, the two young A24 stars are set to star in a new feature directed by John J. Budion (“Rockaway“) and written by Meaghan Cleary. Ken H. Keller and Caron Rudner will produce for Related Pictures Group, while Brendan Thomas and Tact Media’s Cory Thompson will executive produce. David Polemeni and Donald Malter will also serve as executive producers for RPG.
Per Variety, Kim will play “a bright nine-year-old” who befriends Fisher’s “eccentric teenager who’s also looking to escape a dysfunctional life and mother.” The two join forces and face-off against local law enforcement who are convinced Kim’s character “might be offing his babysitters.”
Now, how “Latchkey Kids” isn’t an A24 film is anyone’s guess, but this sounds very exciting. Fisher was praised for her darkly comedic role in “Eighth Grade” and Alan S. Kim is promising to be the young breakout star of 2021 with a fantastic role in “Minari.” So seeing them in another project that showcases both of the actor’s comedic skills in a dark movie that can easily get serious very fast sounds promising

Meanwhile, director John J. Budion has mostly worked doing visual effects on films like “Extraction,” and “Midsommar.” His previous directorial effort, “Rockaway,” already gave us a coming-of-age story with darker, horror-adjacent undertones that followed two brothers plotting revenge against their abusive father.
“Latchkey Kids” will reportedly start production this June.
