'The Lovebirds' First Look: Kumail Nanjiani & Issa Rae Star In New Comedy From 'The Big Sick' Director

With back-to-back films such as “Hello, My Name is Doris” and “The Big Sick,” filmmaker Michael Showalter has proven that he’s one of the best comedic directors working today. So, no matter what his next project was going to be, you better believe that we were going to keep an eye out for whatever he has up his sleeve. Well, that next project is “The Lovebirds,” arriving this spring, and as seen in a new image from the film, the cast alone is worth the ticket purchase.

“The Lovebirds” stars Kumail Nanjiani (reteaming with Showalter after the aforementioned, Oscar-nominated “The Big Sick) and Issa Rae as the romantic partners suggested by the title. Outside of the two leads, and the image showing them in truly outrageous clothing, not much is known about Showalter’s latest film. But in a new interview with EW, Rae and Nanjiani do talk about a couple of interesting aspects to the comedy.

Rae explained that the roles in the film were originally written for two white leads. This led to the film having to undergo some rewrites, as both she and Nanjiani are, last I checked, not white.

“Initially they were written for white people which, plot-wise, would have been a different story,” said Rae. “It’s not a story about race but we wanted to acknowledge our race and the fact that we’re an interracial couple.”

While the plot and the changes that were made after the casting are being kept under wraps for now, there is one thing that Nanjiani is willing to share about the film —why the hell they’re both wearing ridiculous clothes in the first teaser image.

“Due to — spoilers — we end up having to get new clothes at a CVS-type store,” he said. “Since we’re in such dire straits, we don’t put much thought into what clothes to buy. So…that’s how you end up looking if you randomly pick clothes up at a CVS.”

“The Lovebirds” is expected to arrive in theaters on April 3. You can look at the first look image from the film below:
