There have been many keys to Marvel‘s massive success, but one of them has been knowing which of their characters work for the big screen, and which might be better suited to TV. And it has led to some interesting decisions. If you had told us a while back that a “Guardians Of The Galaxy” movie would happen instead of “Daredevil,” we would’ve said you were crazy, but that’s just one of the many risks the comic studio has taken. And indeed, with Matt Murdock being prepped for a Drew Goddard-penned Netflix series, it looks like we’ll be getting a fresh take on the character last seen inhabited by a regretful Ben Affleck.
Collider recently sat down with Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada who teased a little bit about “Daredevil,” and what fans can expect. “The scripts are coming in. They are pretty fantastic. They’re really emotional. They’re very, very original. But at the same time, it is Daredevil. It is Matt Murdock,” he explained. And it seems the approach will be something grittier than the glossier, flashier Marvel movies.
“Although these are superhero stories, this is different now. This is the street level…this is the street-level noir side of the Marvel Universe. Something that you haven’t really, really seen in any of our Marvel movies. And probably more ground level, than I think you’ve seen,” Quesada said. “This is not like us doing Batman, ‘Dark Knight‘ or any of that stuff. This is very Marvel doing street level superheroes.”
To that end, Quesada confirms that the show “will exist within the cinematic universe again, so this is all the same world as ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ and ‘The Avengers‘ ” because obviously, and that casting is starting up.
But it looks like Marvel is ready to take a few chances on Netflix, and try a few things out they likely can’t do when spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a single movie. And it’ll be interesting to see how it all works out.
