"The Dark Tower" has had a long history of not being made. From the start, it was conceived as a trilogy that would be bridged with a television series between each movie to keep the narrative rolling. As you might guess, that’s a bold gamble, and Universal passed on the idea in 2011. Unfazed, producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer walked over to Warner Bros. and even reduced the budget, but they too also turned it down. In 2013, Netflix considered taking on the project but nothing came of that. Now, another studio will give it a try.
Deadline reports that Sony and Media Rights Capital are teaming up to co-finance "The Dark Tower." Even more, it will be the mega franchise that Ron Howard — now producing, but not directing — first envisioned, with both multiple movies and a TV series in the works. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner have written a new draft of the script based on "The Gunslinger," the first book in the series, and it looks like it’s all systems go.
Right now, the plan is to find a director before any cast members are brought on board. Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem, and Aaron Paul had all been mentioned over the years as possibilities, but we’ll see if any of them stick. And while this might seem like a big risk, in today’s era of cinematic crossovers and shared universes, it makes total sense. But will it work? Let us know below.
