Mel Gibson To Co-Write & Direct A Remake Of Sam Peckinpah Classic 'The Wild Bunch'

It appears that Mel Gibson is starting to get a pretty damn full schedule over the next couple years. In addition to helming a new World War II film and starring alongside Colin Farrell in another film, Gibson has his eyes set to the future. And according to Deadline, his future now includes co-writing and directing a remake of the classic Western, “The Wild Bunch.”

The report states that Gibson is combining forces with Bryan Bagby to pen the new script, and will eventually go behind the camera as the film’s director. For those not familiar with the Sam Peckinpah 1969 film, “The Wild Bunch” follows a group of older outlaws that are attempting the classic “one last score” as the American West begins to change all around them, being replaced by the coming industrial age. The original stared William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, and Edmond O’Brien.

But before Gibson can take a stab at the remake, he’s got a couple projects in between. First, there’s “Destroyer,” which we’ve reported on before. That film is a World War II drama that is set to star Mark Wahlberg. Obviously, everyone remembers how Gibson and Wahlberg were electric on screen together in “Daddy’s Home 2.” Apparently, their partnership blossomed and Gibson is going to direct Wahlberg next spring.

There’s also the film “War Pigs,” which finds Gibson starring alongside Colin Farrell. “War Pigs” is directed by Tommy Wirkola, who is best known for his films “Dead Snow” and “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.” The film follows a group of ex-marines who go on one last mission, looking for revenge against a cartel that murdered one of their own. This film will be shot before “Destroyer.”

No release date set for Gibson’s “The Wild Bunch.” The project is still in the early stages and probably won’t begin production until 2020. So we’re still a few years off.
