MoviePass Announces Top 12 Most Popular Films Of The Summer Based On Subscriber Data

Whether you think MoviePass is the future of moviegoing or the scourge of the industry, one thing is for sure – its subscribers sure do like to go to the movies. The only problem is whether or not that is good for the company’s bottom line.

In a new piece by Business Insider, MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe decided to share some statistics for the summer movie season to show just how many tickets are being purchased through the subscription service. While there are no surprises as to what films are most popular, the startling stats are the number of tickets sold over the last 2+ months.

“We bought over 5% of all tickets in the first half of the year, and 70% of the time our subscribers were bringing people who don’t have MoviePass,” Lowe said. “We think we’ve played at least some role in energizing moviegoing.”

Leading the way, of course, is “Avengers: Infinity War” with “over 1.15 million tickets.” There are really no surprises after that, except perhaps strong showings for “Tag,” “Hereditary,” and “Life of the Party.” If anything, it shows the service tends to favor comedies (you might as well take a chance on a comedy when it’s essentially free) and films with strong buzz, as is the case with “Hereditary.” Generally, people tend to get more adventurous, and liberal, with their ticket-buying.

Noticeably absent from these stats are the films “Gotti” and “American Animals.” Granted, these were films in fairly limited release, relative to ‘Infinity War’ and the like, but if you are a subscriber to the service, then you know that MoviePass was pushing these films HARD. Makes sense too, considering they were films that the service had a financial stake in. But apparently, not even “free” tickets were enough to get more than 10% of their subscribers to see the turd “Gotti.”
