Naomi Watts To Star In The Upcoming 'Game Of Thrones' Spin-Off Series For HBO

Naomi Watts is heading to Westeros. But not the one waged in a massive war with Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen leading the way. Watts is traveling back in time to join the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series.

Deadline is reporting that Watts has signed on for the lead in the as-yet-untitled “Game of Thrones” spin-off series from creators Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin. While the plot of the series is still being kept under wraps (as is everything with this franchise), the report states that Watts will play a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret. That sure does sound like someone similar to Cersei Lannister, huh?

As mentioned, the spin-off comes from the minds of Goldman and Martin. Goldman will take the lead as the show’s writer and showrunner. The series will take place 8,000 years before the “current” goings-on in Westeros and will feature a whole new set of characters. The series will show the world’s descent from the Age of Heroes to its darkest hour. It’s reported that the series will give the true origin of the white walkers, as well as the legendary beginnings of families we’ve come to love, such as the Starks.

Watts is perhaps best known for her roles in David Lynch’sMulholland Drive,” as well as the horror film “The Ring.” However, she’s become an A-list actress with tons of high-profile films under her belt, including “King Kong,” “Eastern Promises,” “I Heart Huckabees,” and “The Impossible.” She’s been twice nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in the latter film and “21 Grams,” respectively.

There’s still no word on a release date for the upcoming ‘Thrones’ spin-off. Hell, we don’t even have an official release date for the final season of the current series. That being said, it’s expected that HBO will look to release the upcoming spin-off sometime in 2020, giving just a little bit of breathing room between it and ‘GoT.’
