Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment have released the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s 20th anniversary re-release of the Oscar-winning dark fantasy, which returns to theaters nationwide on October 9. For the first time, the film will be presented theatrically in 4K, with versions available in 3D and HDR by Barco, as well as a 2D HDR version. Each version of the re-release has been overseen by del Toro, who also recorded a new voiceover for the trailer.
That makes this more than a routine anniversary booking. “Pan’s Labyrinth” has always existed in the space between fairy tale and nightmare, grounding its mythic creatures and underground kingdom in the brutality of post-Civil War Spain. The new presentation is being positioned as a way to revisit the film’s elaborate production design, creature work, and shadow-soaked imagery with a level of depth and brightness unavailable during its original theatrical run.
Written and directed by del Toro, the film takes place in 1944, in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Young Ofelia, played by Ivana Baquero, is brought with her pregnant mother to a remote countryside outpost, where her brutal stepfather, Captain Vidal, is tasked with hunting down rebel fighters hiding in the surrounding forest. Near the outpost, Ofelia discovers an ancient labyrinth and meets a mysterious faun, who tells her she is a lost princess from another world. To reclaim her place, she must complete three dangerous tasks as the violence of the real world closes in around her.
The film also stars Maribel Verdú, Doug Jones, and Sergi López, and was produced by del Toro’s Tequila Gang. Released in 2006, “Pan’s Labyrinth” premiered in competition at Cannes and went on to earn six Academy Award nominations, winning three Oscars for cinematography, art direction, and makeup.
“Fathom’s incredible success distributing special engagement releases around major anniversaries makes it the ideal partner as we bring existing and new fans back into the masterpiece from the creative mind of Guillermo del Toro,” said Cineverse Chief Motion Pictures Officer Yolanda Macias.
The 3D work was created by SDFX Studios, whose SVP of Development & Operations, Vincent Defebo, called the project “a dream come true” for the team.
Tickets for “Pan’s Labyrinth” go on sale September 9. The 20th anniversary re-release opens in theaters nationwide on October 9. Watch the trailer below.
