What’s old is new again, especially in horror. As seen with the recent announcements of “Saw” returning, Jordan Peele producing a new “Candyman,” and “Black Christmas” getting a remake, as well as recent releases like “Halloween” and the upcoming “Child’s Play,” the horror genre is looking at its past for its future. And Paramount isn’t about to be left in the dust, as it grabs the tried and true “Paranormal Activity” franchise off the shelf.
According to Deadline, during a recent event, Paramount announced that the studio has teamed with Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions for a brand-new entry in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. For those keeping count, this sequel would mark the seventh film in the series.

Paramount CEO and Studio Chairman Jim Gianopulos said, “We are partnering with uber horror producer Jason Blum to bring a new installment of ‘Paranormal Activity.’”
Unlike “Halloween,” Blumhouse is bringing back “Paranormal Activity” after only several years. The sixth film in the franchise, “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension,” was only released in 2015. And that film marked the apparent end of the franchise, which had finally lost steam after six films over the course of seven years.

It’s unclear what the title or the plot for the new film might be. Perhaps the studio will take direction from the recent “Saw” announcement and try to do some sort of re-imagining of the brand. That would seem like the best idea, as the story of the franchise (and the found-footage gimmick itself) has grown a bit tired.
No release date has been given, but with the speed that Blumhouse pumps out films, it wouldn’t be a shock to see this film come in 2020.
