You might remember that “Project Hail Mary” filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were once involved in an iteration of WB‘s solo “Flash” film (one of many creative teams that attempted the DC Comics project), however, they sound like they might want to circle back to their “idea” for the film, potentially for James Gunn‘s and Peter Safran‘s DCU at DC Studios.
The subject of their “Flash” take came up during a recent chat on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, which they confirm got to the treatment level but stopped from detailing what their idea was because they may want to use it in the future.

“We had a very elaborate treatment,” Miller said of dipping their toes into the world of DC Comics. Lord continued, “It was pretty different [what ended up being made]…It’s a good idea that I’m afraid [we’d not be] able to use at another time.”
When asked about a desire to revisit their “Flash” idea in the future, Miller said, “Listen, we get intrigued by things that are intriguing.” Lord chiming in with praise for the pic that ultimately got made, “We love the movie that the Muschietti’s made.”
Seeing the duo enter the world of DC isn’t all that shocking, given their growing reputation for fleshing out the “Spider-Verse” with a trilogy of animated films (“Spider-Man: Beyond The Spiverse” heading to screens in 2027) and a live-action Prime series, “Spider-Noir,” we’d imagine that the DCU could be a entry point for their take on “Flash,” if the character gets a new version anytime soon (likely on the table with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman recastings). Whether moving forward with a new Flash becomes a priority for DC Studios remains to be seen.
That wasn’t the only franchise return they were asked about, as Horowitz wanted to gauge Lord/Miller’s interest in a return to the “Star Wars” universe after their infamous firing from “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and being replaced with Ron Howard. The two don’t sound all psyched by the idea of coming back to such a large/demanding franchise and are more concerned about finding the “franchises of the future” or simply seeking out tantalizing original stories.
“I wouldn’t say the emotional wounds are too deep; it’s just we’re at this precise moment, we’re releasing a movie in theaters that is original, and one of the opportunities that presents itself when you’re not on the hook for making three Han Solo sequels…We have the opportunity to create franchises of the future or just an original movie that delivers the way the movies we grew up with delivered…We’re on a mission to try to find the most original thing we can get out there,” Lord said.
Feel free to watch/listen to that full exchange with Lord/Miller below, as “Project Hail Mary” is currently in theaters, wowing audiences after securing a solid $80.6 domestic opening at the box office, and you can read The Playlist’s review right here.
