'Rise Of Skywalker' Hitting Disney+ On 'Star Wars Day'; Months Before It Was Originally Expected

Lucasfilm always likes to do something special for “Star Wars Day” every year. On May the 4th (“May The Force…”), the studio normally has something special for fans to help celebrate the galaxy far, far away. And this year, we already know that Disney+ is going to premiere the first episode of its behind-the-scenes docuseries about “The Mandalorian” on that date, but now we know that the service is also using that day to debut ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ on its streaming service, weeks before it was originally expected to.

According to Disney, the final film in the Skywalker Saga is making its way to Disney+ on May 4, giving the streaming service access to all 9 films in the series. That means, if they’re are so inclined, folks can spend their entire “Star Wars Day” streaming all 9 films back-to-back. For some people, the lockdown makes it so they have a lot of time on their hands, so why not?

To help announce this release, Disney+ has debuted a new trailer for the unveiling of ‘Rise of Skywalker’ coming to the service. And instead of focusing on the final film, which is incredibly divisive and not necessarily the celebration that the studio hoped for, Disney is using the trailer to highlight that the service will have all of the films available, including the good ones!

The final film in the Skywalker Saga was released in December and went on to become a box office hit, though not nearly as big as Disney and Lucasfilm were expecting. In fact, according to a recent Deadline piece, ‘Rise of Skywalker’ is Skywalker Saga film with the lowest profit in the Disney era. Adding insult to injury, ‘Rise’ didn’t even make more profit than the first spin-off film, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” The only Disney era “Star Wars” film to do worse than ‘Rise’ is “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

Long story short, if you’re a fan of the franchise, having access to ‘Rise of Skywalker’ on your streaming service is great news. And it’s a fitting way to celebrate May 4.
