'She’s Gotta Have It' Series Goes From Showtime To Netflix, Spike Lee Direct Entire First Season

Spike Lee has done it all. From feature films, both at the studio and independent level, documentaries, commercials and music videos, he has made his mark in all of those genres. While the director has yet to try his hand at a television series, it’s not for lack of trying. Two years ago, it was announced that Lee was developing a series based on his debut feature “She’s Gotta Have It” at Showtime, which he would write and direct. That was pretty much the only word on the subject, yet the project now has a new home and looks to be moving forward.

With the movie celebrating its 30th birthday this year, Netflix has snapped up the “She’s Gotta Have It” project, ordering a ten episode first season, with Lee directing each episode. Much like the movie, the show will follow Brooklyn artist Nola Darling navigating romance with three different suitors: model Greer Childs; investment banker, Jamie Overstreet; and b-boy sneakerhead Mars Blackmon (played by Lee in the 1986 film and in countless Nike ads afterward).

Going to television with the imprimatur of Netflix sounds like it could be great move for Lee, who has had to make his most recent features with fairly modest budgets. We’ll have to wait and see whether or not he can still authentically channel the voice of a younger generation thirty years on, but we’ll be eager to watch the show when it hits the small screen.
