Sigourney Weaver Talks "Primal" Nature Of Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien,' Says It Gives Ripley "An Ending"

For anyone eagerly awaiting Neill Blomkamp‘s take on the “Alien” franchise, we’re at the point in time where there’s going to be a lot of talk, but very little action. With the movie on hold at the moment thanks to Ridley Scott, and his desire to make his multiple “Prometheus” prequel movies that will eventually connect to the first installment, Blomkamp’s retcon, which basically ignores “Alien 3” and “Alien: Resurrection,” is on hold. But Sigourney Weaver is quite excited about the project, and before her appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, where she’ll be on hand to celebrate the 30th anniversary of James Cameron‘s “Aliens,” she’s hyping up Blomkamp’s movie which doesn’t even have a greenlight yet.

“It’s a great story and it’s satisfying to me to give this woman an ending,” she told EW about where Ripley goes next in the screenplay (which she also says is “great”). And beyond that, it seems the very idea of the titular creatures themselves are addressed in the movie.

“The script itself has so much in it that’s so original, but also really satisfies the, I would say, the primal needs of the aliens,” she teased. “It’s a tribute to all of the great work that the other directors have done, in a way, but goes in a completely new direction. I hope we’ll do it.”

For now, both Weaver and Blomkamp are working on other gigs, so this movie could be some distance away, though as we’ve learned in recent years, sometimes if you talk about something long enough in Hollywood, it’ll eventually happen. And for my money, I’m more interested in what happens to Ripley next than in figuring out all the steps that led to the original story launched in “Alien.”
