'Spencer': Pablo Larraín’s Princess Diana Drama Starring Kristen Stewart Will Debut In Venice

Sure, we’re still in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival, but it’s also time to look ahead to the fall festivals, as it appears the Venice Film Festival has added yet another high-profile film to its lineup. So far, we have a Venice that is going to include the sci-fi epic, “Dune,” the horror sequel, “Halloween Kills,” a family drama, “The Power of the Dog,” and now, a highly-anticipated biopic.

According to Variety, Pablo Larraín’s latest feature, “Spencer,” is set to make its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The highly-anticipated feature tells the story of Princess Diana, played by Kristen Stewart, over the course of a weekend where she comes to the decision to separate from Prince Charles after rumors of his extramarital affairs. Joining Stewart in the cast are Jack Farthing, Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris.

Though the film is debuting at Venice later this year, the film isn’t expected to get a full worldwide release until 2022, to mark the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. That said, the film is expected to qualify for this year’s awards season, where it’s likely to be a contender. As you may recall, Larraín is no stranger to awards recognition, particularly at the Oscars. His 2016 film, “Jackie,” landed three Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for that film’s star, Natalie Portman. Many are positioning Stewart in a similar way, as a strong contender for acting trophies at the end of the year.

In addition to “Spencer,” Larraín’s 2021 is already pretty packed with the debut of “Lisey’s Story,” which is his star-studded Apple TV+ drama series based on the Stephen King novel. That series is also expected to be an awards contender, as it’s yet another project from the filmmaker with an incredibly strong female lead performance (Julianne Moore).

As mentioned, “Spencer” doesn’t yet have a formal release date, but the Venice Film Festival is expected to begin this September.
