When Mark Hamill suggested we might be reaching the point of oversaturation with superhero movies, there were some who suggested the actor was perhaps being a bit glib. But a day later, we’ve learned there’s a new Spider-Man trilogy in the works, and now yet another character being brought from the comic book page to the multiplex.
THR reveals that Valiant‘s “Shadowman” is starting its journey to the big screen. Reginald Hudlin (“The Ladies Man,” the upcoming drama “Marshall” starring Chadwick Boseman) will be directing the project, that centers on an African-American musician in New Orleans who — you guessed it — gets supernatural powers. Here’s Valiant‘s introduction the character:
There are a million dreams in the Big Easy. But now its worst nightmare is about to come true. As the forces of darkness prepare to claim New Orleans as their own, Jack Boniface must accept the legacy he was born to uphold. As Shadowman, Jack is about to become the only thing that stands between his city and an army of unspeakable monstrosities from beyond the night. But what is the true cost of the Shadowman’s otherworldly power? And can Jack master his new abilities before Master Darque brings down the wall between reality and the darkness of the dimension known as Deadside?
J. Michael Straczynski (“Sense8,” “Thor“) has penned a script, but it will be given a pass by Adam Simon (“Salem,” “The Haunting In Connecticut“). The project is the latest by Valiant who are following Marvel and DC to cinemas, as they’ve also got a five-picture deal at Sony, which includes the brewing “Harbinger,” “Bloodshot,” and “Archer & Armstrong.” Thus far, however, nothing is close to being in front cameras, but it seems that Valiant is putting as many irons in the fire as they can, with the hope that something gets cooking soon.
