Taron Egerton Says 'Kingsman 2' Received An "Unfair Kicking" & Reveals His "Dream" For Ending The Series

No one expected “Kingsman: The Secret Service” to become the big hit it was back in 2014. The film firmly placed star Taron Egerton on the map as a talent to watch and proved that Colin Firth could not only do action, but do it pretty damn well. However, last year, when “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” was released, reviews weren’t nearly as good and the box office suffered. Now, Egerton explains why he’d like to come back for a third (and perhaps final) installment and why he doesn’t agree with the reaction to the sequel.

Speaking to the Empire Podcast, Egerton explains why he won’t be involved in the forthcoming “Kingsman: The Great Game” (spoiler alert: it’s a prequel, set 100 years in the past) and what he foresees as the right way to end the franchise, or maybe pass it on to a new generation. But more than anything, he just wants people to enjoy his final ‘Kingsman’ film, whenever it comes out.

“I would like the third one to be better received than the second one was. I thought we got a bit of an unfair kicking, if I’m totally honest,” said the actor.

When asked if the critical reaction to ‘The Golden Circle’ was difficult to deal with, Egerton replied, “I think in some respects it was because I just gave everything to it. And then it was so quickly torn down. I did feel a bit of a sting. I think in some respects it wasn’t a quite as well put together film as the first one but it certainly wasn’t a bad film.”

Now, as for how he feels the series should end (at least the films he will star in), the actor said, “I think what I would like to happen is for us to do a third one and for it to feel like a worthy third installment to what has been a great part of my life.”

He continued, “And then my dream for it would be that I would kind hang up my suit for 10, 15 years and then come back and pass the mantle on. That’s what I’d like to do. I think that would be fun. But we would have to take a step away for it for a while before we did that.”

Obviously, for that to happen, fans will have to support the upcoming prequel in droves. That would secure that filmmaker Matthew Vaughn would get the chance to finish the trilogy with Egerton and Firth and perhaps launch a new take on the series in the future.

The prequel, “Kingsman: The Great Game” is scheduled to be released on November 8, 2019.
