Matthew Vaughn Plans Kick-Ass Reboot & Massive 'Kingsman' Expansion

If one made a list of all the film producers turned successful film directors, British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn might be at the very top of that list. The director, who started out as Guy Ritchie’s producer and then began to chart his own path with the similar British crime film “Layer Cake,” has arguably surpassed his former collaborator. Vaughn’s already created two mega-million dollar franchises—the “Kingsman” spy series and the “Kick-Ass” comic books series—while taking on major studio work like rebooting the “X-Men” series and adapting the celebrated graphic novel “Stardust.” He’s also just recently launched his own mini-studio called Marv Studios, and he plans on charting his future through it. And the plans are massively ambitious.

In an interview with Empire this week, Vaughn has revealed that he’s doubling down on the brand I.P. he’s helped create. First up, he confirms a “Kingsman 3” film is on the way, and what he describes as the “conclusion of the Harry Hart-Eggsy relationship.” But that’s not the end for the series. He’s also planning a movie prequel entitled “Kingsman: The Great Game,” which would look at the spy organization at the turn of the 20th century. And get this, he hopes that the third ‘Kingsman’ and ‘The Great Game’ will shoot back to back.

That’s apparently not enough ‘Kingsman’ in the works. Vaughn also said an eight-hour ‘Kingsman TV’ show was in the works, alongside yet another film this time focusing on the American side of the spy universe introduced in 2017’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” U.S. characters of which included Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Jeff Bridges. ‘Kingsman’ fatigue perhaps? Obviously, Vaughn’s not worried.

That’s not all. Despite “Kick-Ass 2” dying on the vine in theaters, Vaughn plans on bringing the series back to life in a new form. “We’re going to reboot Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl,” he said referencing the characters played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz in the original films based on the Mark Millar-penned comic book creations.

In the interview, Vaughn mentioned discussions of a solo Hit-Girl film and hinted that Patience Lee, a new ‘Kick-Ass’ characters introduced by Millar last year could also join the overall universe. “Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues,” he said.
