Watchmen, We're Here, Unbelievable Among 2020 TCA Awards Nominees

There are a little over three days left in Emmy nomination voting and the Television Critics Association (TCA) has given Television Academy members who haven’t completed their ballots yet something to think about. The nominations for the 2020 TCA Awards are out and featured a number of pleasant surprises. Not so surprising where the two programs that earned the most nominations, “Watchmen” and “Unbelievable” with four each.

Damon Lindelof’s Peabody winner earned nods in the Movie or Miniseries, Individual Achievement in Drama (Regina King), New Program and Program of the Year categories. Netflix’s “Unbelievable” also earned New Program and Program of the Year nods along with Individual Achievement in Drama nods for both Kaitlyn Dever and Merrit Wever. “Better Call Saul,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “Succession” and “Mrs. America” rounded out the prestigious Program of the Year category.

Other notable nominees included Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian,” ESPN’s “The Last Dance,” Hulu’s “Ramy,” HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” FX on Hulu’s “Mrs. America,” Hulu’s “Hillary,” HBO’s “We’re Here” and AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” FX’s “Pose,” Netflix’s “Never have I Ever,” Hulu’s “The Great” and HBO’s “Succession,” which earned three nominations.

Among individual networks, HBO landed 16 nominations, Netflix earned 10 nods, FX and FX on Hulu earned 7 moms and both Hulu and PBS landed six apiece.

Surprising omissions from the TCA included “Ozark,” “Tiger King,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Dickinson, “Little America,” “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” and “Killing Eve.”

Traditionally, the TCA Awards are handed out in a ceremony during the organization’s summer press tour. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will be no in-person ceremony. The TCA has not picked a date to reveal the winners but noted it will be later this summer.
