'The Flash': Barbara Muschietti Says Film "Restarts Everything"

We don’t know many things about the upcoming “Flash” movie, but we know two key things: it involves the multiverse, and a lot of Batmans. Now, thanks to producer Barbara Muschietti, we know something else, that the film will “restart everything.”

Ever since it was announced that we’d get a movie based on “The Flash,” and especially after the negative reviews for “Justice League” started coming in, it was rumored that Warner Bros. would use “The Flash” to essentially reboot their entire cinematic universe by adapting the Flashpoint comicbook. After all, Flashpoint was used to launch the New 52 comics reboot so it would make sense that Flash could reboot the DCEU too.

Muschietti took the time to answer fan questions during a FanDome panel and teased the upcoming film and its connection to Flashpoint. “Well, I want you to go see it, so I’m not going to tell you a lot,” Muschietti explained. “But what I will tell you is that it’s a ride. It’s going to be fun and exciting and there are a lot of DC characters in it. Flash is the superhero of this film because he is the bridge between all of these characters and timelines. And in a way, it restarts everything and doesn’t forget anything.”

Back in January, director Andy Muschietti hinted he would take adapt elements from Flashpoint in the “Flash” movie. Though he didn’t go into details about the plot, he said his film will feature a “different version of ‘Flashpoint’ than you’re expecting.”

Of course, the prospect of a Flashpoint-style reset button could be an interesting way forward for the DCEU. It would allow them to mix the stuff that worked in their previous films, while wiping away everything that didn’t (say, “Suicide Squad,” the whole Martha thing in “Batman v. Superman“). If nothing else, it would definitely be a different superhero story than what we’re used to on the big screen, given that we’re getting not one, but two Batmans.
