'The Flash': Filmmakers Unveil New Concept Art But Are Mum On The Future Of The Batmen

Flash fact! “The Flash” director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti, star Ezra Miller and screenwriter Christina Hodson stopped by DC Fandome today for a very fast rundown of the first-ever ‘Flash’ feature film today.

Given the panel was only 10 minutes, not much could be revealed. Fans were hoping that the crew would offer some juicy tidbits about Vanity Fair’s bombshell report this past week that both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton would return as Batman and Bruce Wayne in “The Flash” movie.

Unfortunately, while the crew spoke generally about their excitement at exploring the multi-verse, they were a little sparse on the specific details. “This film is immensely important, we have all these characters that exist in their own bubble,” Dodson explained. “This movie, by opening that door in the comics, all these characters and stories can start to collide. The cinematic is going to be born out of this movie, out of Barry’s story.”

“There are many potential crossovers in the DC multiverse,” Hodson continued, seemingly tip-toeing around the new of Batman’s appearance in the movie. But while the names Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck were not mentioned during the panel, Keaton’s Batman did make an appearance in some of the concept art shared by the crew. During the panel, Muschietti shared a few pieces of concept art that would highlight Barry Allen’s new suit in the film. “It’s more organic, you can see light embedded in it,” and it was created by Bruce Wayne, according to Muschietti.

Even as a piece of art, the new costume seems more in keeping with the comic book character (and not as clunky as the one that appeared in the “Justice League” film).

“The Flash” has had a lot of trouble coming to the screen and it feels like there were dozens of versions in the works that eventually collapsed. Lord & Miller gave a pitch to DC that never went anywhere—though they probably would have made had they not done the “Solo: A Star Wars Story” movie— and then versions attempted by Seth Grahame-Smith, “The Mandalorian” and “Dope” filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa, and “Game Night” directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. Until recently, no one seemed to know or agree about what a ‘Flash’ film should be like.

But the Muschiettis and Hodson—a screenwriter that wrote “Birds Of Prey” and Warner Bros. seems to love—seem to have finally cracked the code. “The Flash” currently has a June 2, 2022 release date. Let’s see if they can speed along fast enough and make that date without any COVID-19 updates.
