Amazon MGM Studios has landed a new package deal with an original period action movie called “The Pirate,” which has the involvement of both Jason Momoa and David Leitch.
Deadline was the first to dish about the tantalizing project, as Leitch and partner/wife Kelly McCormick are in negotiations to produce via their 87North, while Momoa’s On the Roam is also in talks to produce. There is also talk that this could morph into a starring vehicle for the actor, with Leitch said to be potentially directing as well.
The pistol-hot spec-script penned by Will Dunn, a writer who worked on Marvel Studios series “Ms. Marvel,” is said to be a high-seas action flick in the vein of Gareth Evans‘ “The Raid,” but set on a pirate ship instead of a high-rise apartment building.
They haven’t worked together before, but are both from the world of “The Fast & The Furious,” with Leitch directing the spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” and Momoa playing the Brazilian villain of the last installment.
This will be a reunion for Amazon and Leitch, who are currently working on the heist thriller “How To Rob A Bank” that has Nicholas Hoult, Pete Davidson, Zoë Kravitz, and Anna Sawai in lead roles. Another project in the works is a live-action film at Netflix based on the extremely popular Xbox-exclusive video game franchise, “Gears of War.”
Momoa recently landed his dream DC Comics part as the alien bounty hunter Lobo, who’ll appear in Milly Alcock‘s “Supergirl” movie due out next year (in theory, could end up returning for James Gunn‘s next Kryptonian event film), and leads Apple TV+‘s fantastic Hawaiian historical drama “Chief of War.” His most recent feature film was “A Minecraft Movie,” which was a huge global success with audiences, and there is early development at Legendary Entertainment for a sequel, as Warner Bros. is keen on getting a second installment in the works as soon as possible.
Funny enough, Momoa once played a historical pirate on the Comedy Central series “Drunk History,” that role being of Pirate John Lafitte, who helped the Americans/Andrew Jackson defeat the British during the War of 1812.
“The Pirate” certainly sounds like a great action concept. We’ll have to be patient to see when production begins, as it’ll have to be tailored around Momoa’s busy schedule.
