'The Society' Trailer: 'Lord Of The Flies' Meets 'The Leftovers,' But This Time, Parents Are Gone & Hell Breaks Loose For Teens

The Netflix machine continues to roll out new content catering to its young adult audience. With the success of films and series like, “To All The Boys I Loved Before,” and its impending sequel and the part two of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” on its way, Netflix is tapping into a strong, large demographic. And it doesn’t appear the streaming service will be slowing down, continuing to cater to the young adult age group. “The Society” is the latest addition to the Netflix original series catalog, with strong ties to a book its targeted audience may have read, or are currently reading, in their high school English classes.

“The Society” reads like a take on William Golding‘s seminal novel, “Lord Of The Flies.” A group of teenagers finds themselves transported to a version of their town where there is no trace of the existence of their parents, or any adult figures for that matter. Like any teenager free of parental constraints, the teens first enjoy the splendor of the lack of parental supervision. But in time they come to realize the freedom they have gained needs order. For those who read Golding’s novel, the lessons learned at the price of freedom delve into some fairly dark territory. “The Society,” it appears, will follow suit. Kathryn Newton (“Halt And Catch Fire,” “Big Little Lies,” “Blockers“) stars in the series that introduces a slew of young talent to the small screen. Chris Keyser (“Tyrant“) serves as the series showrunner

Here is the official synopsis:

“The Society” follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town without any trace of their parents. Their newfound freedom will be fun… but it will also be very dangerous.  As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive.

“The Society” launches globally on Netflix on May 10. Watch the trailer below.
