Timothée Chalamet Almost Guarantees A 'Call Me By Your Name' Sequel & Says "Armie And I Are 1000% In"

Normally, fans of arthouse cinema don’t have to worry about franchise filmmaking. The idea of sequels is almost, completely irrelevant, minus a few outliers. However, with rumors and speculation swirling around the idea of a “Call Me By Your Name 2,” it appears that arthouse fans are going to have another potential franchise to put up there with the ‘Before’ Trilogy from Richard Linklater. And to add fuel to the fiery hearts of fans hoping to see him return to the role, actor Timothée Chalamet not only thinks the sequel will happen but almost guarantees it.

In a new interview with Time, the actor discusses a sequel to the film that earned him his first Oscar nomination earlier this year. “I don’t see any world where [‘Call Me By Your Name 2’] doesn’t happen,” Chalamet says. “I think Andre [Aciman, author of the original novel] is comfortable with a sequel being made. I know Luca [Guadagnino, director of the film] really wants it. And I know Armie [Hammer, Chalamet’s co-star] and I are 1000% in.”

This comment seems to echo that of the aforementioned Guadagnino, who has been championing a sequel to his film for almost a year now. Of course, he had other priorities in the meantime, such as helming the upcoming “Suspiria” remake. But perhaps the sequel is next on his list? We shall see.

However, regardless of the timing, the real question is about the storyline. Without spoiling the original film, which everyone should go see if they haven’t, there are many questions about what a possible sequel would look like. Chalamet has some thoughts.

“I think it’ll be a couple of years later,” Chalamet says. “And I think that’s cool—to take advantage of the ‘Boyhood’-style of storytelling. That isn’t done all the time.”

For those not aware, “Boyhood” is the critically-acclaimed film from Richard Linklater (who was mentioned previously as having one of the few arthouse trilogies), which followed the life of a boy over the course of 12 years as he went through adolescence all the way until early-adulthood. So, referencing that film is going to be enough to send fans into overdrive, as far as excitement goes. It also leads to some lofty expectations, such as more sequels even further down the line?

Either way, if Chalamet is to be believed, then not only is “Call Me By Your Name 2” a strong possibility, but it’s pretty much a sure thing. And no matter what, that’s an interesting prospect.
