Essentially the anti-Apatow, director David Gordon Green has found a habit in obtaining the leanest running times possible for his films, and with his 81 minute 2011 film “The Sitter” (squaring off against “Carnage” as one of the shortest of last year) arriving on Blu-Ray today, two deleted scenes are available to watch now.
Green has spoken before regarding the surfeit of quality deleted material from “The Sitter,” and while the results are hardly the discovery of a four-hour cut of “The Tree of Life,” the presence of Sam Rockwell makes them worth a look all the same. Rockwell features prominently in both clips, hosted by CHUD and Movieline, showcasing his role as a maniacal drug dealer crossing paths with Jonah Hill's demented babysitting stint, and it is a wise move. Unless Clifton Collins Jr. or Eric Stoltz is up for it, the crazy drug pusher is a cliché best left untouched, but Rockwell brings his formidable comedic chops to the forefront here, elevating the deleted scenes and final film around him to a higher level. A supporting turn by J.B. Smoove, in the first clip as a wounded drug minion, delights as well.
“The Sitter” struggled to find an audience in its theatrical release, after the barrage of minotaur dick jokes and the chuckle-worthy Justin Theroux performance that was “Your Highness,” but it seems Green may have had a finer film on his hands than what was delivered to little fanfare.
