First Footage From Monster Movie 'The Mummy' Starring Tom Cruise Revealed

Say what you will about the Brendan FraserThe Mummy” movies, but they never took themselves too seriously. But it seems that as Universal gears up their planned monster movie universe, they are going for po-faced and gritty, which begs the question, when will this approach to franchise material start getting old?

The first footage from “The Mummy” has arrived in advance of the full-length trailer on Sunday and….geez. Tom Cruise runs, and looks very concerned, while Russell Crowe pops up, giving us a taste of his well-tailored Dr. Jekyll (like I said, this is a monster movie universe, so expect lots of little cameos like that). Here’s the official synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

“The Mummy” opens on June 9, 2017.
