Rumor: Christopher Nolan Will Crash $5 Million WWII Plane For 'Dunkirk' Sequence

We already know Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk” is going have the director’s trademark approach to grand spectacle, with the WWII movie lensing in IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film. But the director is also going for authenticity where he can. This spring it was reported that the production had acquired the French T-47 Class Destroyer battleship, Maillé-Brézé, and it was being fixed up and brought back to functionality for use in the movie. But apparently, that’s not all.

According to Indie Revolver (grain of salt, as always), Warner Bros. has paid out $5 million bucks for a vintage WWII plane, possibly one that once belonged to the German Luftwaffe, and it will be tricked out with IMAX cameras, and used in a number of sequences. And then when that’s all done, they’re going to crash it, in what I’m sure will be some kind of spectacular glory.

Of course, none of this is confirmed, but if any director these days can get a studio to buy them an aircraft to destroy, it’s probably Christopher Nolan. And given the movie is set for a summer release — not the kind of date usually associated with WWII pictures — I would assume “Dunkirk” is bringing with it the Nolan razzle dazzle we’ve come to expect. Thus, this rumor doesn’t seem totally out there, but again, we’ll see how it bears out.

Starring Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Cillian Murphy, “Dunkirk” opens on July 21, 2017. Production is now underway. And to get a taste for Nolan’s flair for airplane action sequences, here’s the opening to “The Dark Knight Rises.”
