Here we are. After months and months of build up, the nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards arrived this morning, albeit sadly following the announcement of the death of Alan Rickman (who, let’s not forget, if we start to take the awards too seriously, was never nominated for an Oscar). It’s been an unpredictable season without a clear front-runner, but as we all know, the Oscars have a capacity to surprise.
The nominations are being announced in two batches: the first, with mostly below-the-line categories, by Ang Lee and Guillermo Del Toro, the second by John Krasinski and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
We’ll be going into more depth with our analysis shortly, but as you’ll have seen, "The Revenant" leads the way with twelve nominations, with "Mad Max: Fury Road" close behind with ten. "The Martian" has picked up seven, but missed Best Director for Ridley Scott, while "Carol" got six, but has failed to win a Best Picture nomination. "Spotlight" also has managed six, as has "Bridge Of Spies," while "The Big Short" has culled five nominations, along with "Star Wars" (though those are in entirely below-the-line categories). Finally, the Best Picture line-up, which like year, is eight-strong, also includes "Brooklyn" and "Room," while the director of the latter, Lenny Abrahamson, is a surprise Best Director nominee.
Who’s probably not happy today? Harvey Weinstein, whose films "Carol" and "The Hateful Eight" missed out on Best Picture; Quentin Tarantino, who failed to get a Screenplay nod for the latter; David O. Russell, whose "Joy" got a single nomination, and plenty of others. Take a look at the full list of nominees below, and we’ll be back with more analysis later in the day.
