Update: The trailer has now arrived for the film and it actually looks like a warm, tender and funny character piece. In short, it looks great.
After dipping his toes in studio waters for "The Green Hornet," Michel Gondry is headed to Cannes to unveil his much more lo-fi/indie "The We & The I," a mysterious project that will follow a group of high school kids on the bus home on the last day of school. But the ever-busy helmer is also in the midst of shooting his next effort, "Mood Indigo, " which — if the set photos are anything to go by — will see Gondry firmly in his unique and creative wheelhouse.
Set to premiere on Thursday in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar, "The We & I" has mostly been kept under wraps, with rumors of time-travel and sci-fi elements kicking around. We'll soon find out how it all adds up, but until then, a brand new poster and a batch of new images have arrived to give us a peek. Nope, no Delorean as far as we can tell, but with Gondry, even the seemingly ordinary can be deceiving. We'll have our answer in a couple of days.
Meanwhile, Gondry's "Mood Indigo" — which boasts an all-star French cast of Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris, Gad Elmaleh, Omar Sy and Alain Chabat — reads like perfect Gondry material, centering on Colin (Duris), the wealthy inventor of an olfactory musical instrument, the pianocktail. He marries Chloe (Tautou), but unfortunately, she falls ill during their honeymoon thanks to a water lily that enters her lung, and the only way to treat the ailment is to surround her with fresh flowers. The expense of the treatment soon drains his funds.
Lensing has been underway for a little while now, and in addition to the first look Tautou on set, there's a plethora of photos of cars. This certainly looks to be a return for Gondry to the wacky, possibly fantastical worlds of his previous features. You can check out an endless number of pics here and older ones here. But the pick of the new bunch? How about a see-through limousine and a car that has all sorts of greenery growing out of it? Sign us up. "Mood Indigo" images on page two.
