A “Mr. Terrific” series may be the next DC Studios project quietly moving forward. Buried inside The Hollywood Reporter’s larger “Supergirl” postmortem is the news that a series centered on Edi Gathegi’s “Superman” breakout character is in active development, with Allan Heinberg writing the pilot.
That is not the same thing as a series order, of course, and no platform, release window, episode count, or additional creative team has been announced. Still, Heinberg’s involvement suggests the project is more than idle chatter. The writer’s credits include “The Sandman,” “Wonder Woman,” and co-creating Marvel’s “Young Avengers.”
Gathegi’s Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific was one of the more warmly received supporting players in James Gunn’s “Superman,” and the character fits the filmmaker’s broader DCU approach: build out the universe through oddball, character-specific projects rather than relying only on Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
There is also reason to keep the caveats in place. As Bleeding Cool noted, the same THR report reportedly refers to the in-development Jimmy Olsen/Gorilla Grodd project as “DC Crime,” a title Gunn previously pushed back on, so this may not be a formal announcement so much as a glimpse at what is currently being discussed inside the studio.
For now, “Mr. Terrific” appears to be one more sign that Gunn and Peter Safran are still building outward after “Superman,” even as DC Studios deals with the fallout from “Supergirl” and the scrutiny around what comes next.
