'Saw' Director Darren Lynn Bousman Goes From One Gimmick To Another, Will Helm '11 11 11'

After killing people in clever ways in “Saw II,” “Saw III” and “Saw IV,” Darren Lynn Bousman is getting ready to torture audiences in a different way by signing to direct the numerical thriller “11 11 11.”

It’s the brainchild of producer Wayne Rice, who looked at calendar and saw that 11-11-11 fell on Friday, decided he wanted to open a movie on that day (no, we’re not being bitchy, that’s actually the story behind this thing), and set out to find a director to help realize his dream. That man, Darren Lynn Bousman.

There is apparently a “movement” of people who see significance in “the emergence of that number in people’s lives that alerts them to angels or spirit guardians trying to communicate with them. Conspiracy theorists also point to the number 11’s involvement in historical events.” For the rest of us, we chalk it up to coincidence and get on with our lives.

Over some pasta, Rice and Bousman talked about the theory behind the elevens and Bousman has come up with a supernatural story idea that “will take on the idea of 11 gates of Heaven and how on 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month, the 11th gate will open up and something from another world will enter the earthly realm for 49 minutes.”

Sounds ridiculous, but Bousman is striving to make a movie that will be better than “The Number 23” with Jim Carrey, which shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. “Signs” and “The Strangers” are also being pegged as influences proving that Bousman’s DVD collection probably doesn’t run very deep.

Financing is being firmed up but things will start getting creepy if the budget is revealed be $11 million. Bousman is currently writing the script, but production will presumably start early in 2011. [Heat Vision]
