Jared Leto Says He Sent His ‘Suicide Squad’ Castmates Anal Beads & Used Condoms, David Ayer Talks Reshoots

In case you haven’t heard already, Jared Leto went full method for his portrayal of Juggalo Joker in the upcoming “Suicide Squad.” And while Daniel Day-Lewis may wear the crown for staying in character and heavily researching his roles, we’ll bet he never did anything like this.

Speaking with E!, Leto revealed that part of his process in creating the proper tension on set for his character involved sending them anal beads and used condoms, which doesn’t sound intense, so much as gross and kinda unhygienic. “I did a lot of things to create a dynamic, to create an element of surprise, of spontaneity, and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there,” he explained. “The Joker is somebody who doesn’t really respect things like personal space or boundaries.”

Will Smith added that Leto’s approach pretty much raised the bar for everyone around, and it seems they all got used to his antics in the end. “I can’t even begin to tell you the things I got [from Jared]. By that point, I feel like I knew The Joker a bit, so it wasn’t as alarming, but yeah, there were many instances where I didn’t know what to expect from Jared,” Margot Robbie added.

Meanwhile, the rumors that Warner Bros. was worried about “Suicide Squad,” hence ordering reshoots, has been swiftly turned around by the director himself. And speaking with Collider, he couldn’t be more pumped with getting another shot to make the movie even beefier.

“If they don’t like your movie they tend to not want to invest in it. If they love your movie, they give you what you want,” he explained about adding more action to the movie.  “And I don’t think there’s any director that finishes a movie and says, ‘Wow that’s perfect, that’s what I really want it to be.’ Every movie I’ve ever made I wish I could go and grab some additional stuff and that’s exactly the chance I got this time. It’s like getting a new car but you get fancy rims and a new stereo.”

Moreover, Ayer is well aware that his movie needs to hit that tricky sweetspot of making die hard fans go nuts, while appealing to those who have no knowledge of the comic history. “Well the film has to work on two levels, it’s gotta work for the people that know and love the comics and it’s gotta work for the people that know nothing about the comics, and I think it’s gonna work for both,” the director said. “I dug deep in this and really researched the canon, pulled storylines from a lot of different sources, characters from a lot of different sources, and it all works together really well. But I think for someone that doesn’t know any of it, it works great too. It’s dense, let’s just say it’s really dense. There’s a lot of imagery, there’s a lot of nods, and there’s a lot of Easter Eggs.”

“Suicide Squad” arrives on August 5th. Anal beads will cost extra.
