Got a Tip?

Luca Guadagnino Reveals What He’d Need To Direct A Superhero Movie

It says something about our times that every filmmaker interview usually broaches the subject of whether or not they’d direct [insert popular franchise here]. David Fincher has probably been the most candid, recently sharing the risks involved in taking on something massive like “Star Wars.” But at the end of the day, most moviemakers are open to the idea, as long as they’re just not a cog in a machine where they’re ultimately powerless creatively.

It’s probably a good bet that “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino will probably never direct a superhero movie, but if his phone should ever ring, he knows exactly what he needs to hear before signing on.

“If Toby Emmerich of Warner Bros. would call me and say, ‘Luca we want you do make a DC character movie and you can do whatever you want, you would have complete control.’ Then of course I would be responsible and share ideas with them, but I would need complete control of what is made because then I can perform better,” he told The Independent.

That’s pretty much what every filmmaker wants when making a tentpole movie, but that few get. There is so much money and brand reputation on the line, that blockbusters are micro-managed within an inch of their life, and/or extensively reshot (see the two “Star Wars” spinoffs to date, “Justice League“) to get it where they need to be, creatives be damned. So it’s nice to dream that Luca Guadagnino might make a superhero movie, but even he seems to believe it would probably never happen.
