We were already counting down to Damien Chazelle‘s Netflix series for a variety of reasons – a return to the musical genre for the director of “La La Land,” a setting in Paris, not having to leave our couch to watch it – but this Variety exclusive ups our anticipation level. Tahar Rahim is now in discussions to join the Oscar-winning filmmaker on “The Eddy.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Tahar Rahim, the French actor first attracted attention in 2009 for Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet,” and he’s been a fixture in international auteurs’ work ever since, most notably in Asghar Farhadi‘s “The Past.” This won’t be Rahim’s first small-screen excursion though; TV viewers may have spotted him in Hulu‘s “The Looming Tower” or SundanceTV‘s “The Last Panthers.” Jack Thorne (“Wonder,” “Star Wars: Episode IX“) penned the latter miniseries, and he’s also writing the scripts here.

Shot in France, the show will concern the owner and band of a Paris club. “The Eddy” will be eight episodes of musical drama (jazz, perhaps?) with songs from Glen Ballard, whose songwriting work you’ve already sung along with on classic albums like Alanis Morissette‘s “Jagged Little Pill” and Michael Jackson‘s “Bad.” Chazelle is directing two episodes, with more likely helmed by Houda Benyamina (“The Divines“).
This isn’t Chazelle’s only streaming commitment; he’s also slated to direct all the episodes for a series on Apple‘s upcoming service, but news has been quiet on that in recent months.
