Got a Tip?

Naomie Harris Says Barry Jenkins Was Excited About Directing A ‘Bond’ Spin-Off But Barbara Broccoli Turned It Down

We are clearly in a transitional period for the ‘Bond’ franchise. With Daniel Craig definitely…maybe…probably?… stepping away from the role after “No Time to Die,” it’s clear that producer Barbara Broccoli is going to have to figure out how to keep the 007 franchise going in a new era. And according to Naomie Harris, who plays Moneypenny in the Craig-era ‘Bond’ films, the actress had a great idea on how to do that, involving acclaimed director Barry Jenkins.

Recently, Harris appeared on “Good Morning America” and was asked about her ‘Bond’ role, and the story that Barry Jenkins, who directed the actress in “Moonlight,” might be down for doing a spin-off focusing on her Moneypenny character. It appears that everyone seemed excited about the idea. Well, everyone except that one person with the power to make it happen.

“Yes, [Jenkins has] wanted to do a kind of badass, kickass action thing with Moneypenny, which I’m all for, actually,” Harris said.

She added, “I got together with Barbara Broccoli, our producer, and I was like, ‘Let’s make this happen!’ But she wasn’t so down for it. But maybe one day; who knows? The conversation has started, at least.”

It shouldn’t be too surprising that Broccoli turned down the idea of a Moneypenny spin-off. The producer has seemingly been opposed to any sort of spin-off or female-led films in the ‘Bond’ franchise for a while now. She has been seen as a huge status-quo gatekeeper for ‘Bond,’ and considering she’s the person that has control over the creative direction of the franchise, there’s no way that anyone, not even an Oscar-winner like Barry Jenkins, can make a 007 film without her approval.

But hey, in our own minds, we can all imagine how amazing it would have been, right?
