‘Shang-Chi’: Did Marvel Succeed In Introducing The Next Great Avenger? [The Playlist Podcast]

After all the hype from the Marvel Studios marketing machine, it’s finally time for the world to be introduced to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” It’s been a little while since Marvel introduced a new character in a feature film (“Captain Marvel” back in 2019), and the studio is hoping people fall in love with Simu Liu and the Master of Kung-fu. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” tells the story of the titular hero as he has to reckon with his past after his mysterious, evil father comes looking for him after a decade apart. This leads to lots and lots of action, including some of the best fighting we’ve seen in the MCU, culminating in yet another CGI-filled third act. And it’s there that the issues start to show. Joining Simu Liu in the cast are Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, and Michelle Yeoh. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
