Got a Tip?

James Gunn Is Bringing His ‘Suicide Squad’ Composer To Marvel For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’

It’s no secret that James Gunn is knee-deep in pre-production on his upcoming film, “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.” If you look at his social media posts, the filmmaker isn’t shy about showing just how much planning goes into the creation of a Marvel Studios blockbuster. And that includes hiring a composer well before production on the film actually begins.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Gunn explained he was just getting off another Zoom meeting with some of his crew from the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.” And when talking about that, he dropped the name of the composer who is currently writing the music for the highly anticipated sequel.

“We were going through the finale of the film from shot to shot, to shot, to shot and explaining exactly how each shot was going to be done,” said Gunn. “Now, this stuff we’re going to shoot in May. So this is about just planning. After I get off of this, I’m going to have to go listen to some music that John Murphy wrote that we’re going to be playing during the movie. … I guess I’m spoiling the fact that John Murphy is doing the score for [‘Guardians 3’].”

While it’s not the first time Gunn and Murphy have collaborated on a film, the news that the composer is working on the ‘Guardians’ franchise is a bit of a surprise. Previously, the music in the first two films in the franchise was composed by Tyler Bates. But after working together on “The Suicide Squad,” it appears that Gunn and Murphy are ready to turn around quickly collaborate on his Marvel franchise, as well.

Further explaining how he worked with Murphy on the aforementioned “The Suicide Squad,” Gunn talked about how the composer ended up writing pivotal moments of the score well before filming took place, which is something that’ll happen with ‘Guardians 3.’ The reason is that the filmmaker likes hearing the score as he shoots the scenes in question.

“You probably know that John wrote huge sections of the score before we were shooting,” the filmmaker said. “So we shot to those sections of the score. We go through the script, and we already know where all the songs are in the movie. And then we go through the script and we point out the main sections that will need score beforehand…While Daniela Melchior is giving her speech, I’ve got the music in my ears, so that it is almost like she’s performing like a William Shatner-esque poetry-to-music (routine). All of that stuff is planned out.”

Well, even though it does seem like we’re far away from the May 5, 2023 release date for “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3,” it appears that Gunn and Murphy are already deep into the process of getting the film ready.
