'Peacemaker' First Clip: Footage Focuses On Show's Comedic Leanings

James Gunn is undoubtedly making a significant impact over at DC Films and WarnerMedia as the filmmaker gave us the violent but oddly humorous and emotionally engaging comic book romp, “The Suicide Squad.” The lead to a spinoff series, “Peacemaker,” focusing on the foul-mouthed and psychotic character played by John Cena.

HBO Max is confirmed to promote the new show at the big DC Comics event DC FanDome later this month but has released a first-look clip (see below). The first tease features some of the show’s witty banter between multiple characters in a restaurant as Peacemakers’ government handlers take shots at him for showing up in his costume outside of a mission.

It gives a sense of humor that is expected to be at the center of the show, something that might be a little jarring compared to The CW shows that are mostly tailored to a much younger audience. Hopefully, it also telegraphs more DCEU spinoffs, potentially getting series at HBO Max in the future.

Gunn also recently teased on Twitter that a third DC Comics project is on the horizon but stopped short of revealing what it is, but seemingly won’t be the Harley Quinn film “Gotham City Sirens.”

“Yes, I’m developing another DC project besides ‘Peacemaker.’”

Could it be another spinoff or a sequel to “The Suicide Squad”? I guess we’ll have to be patient to find out.

“Peacemaker” will exclusively debut on HBO Max in January 2022 and will be the first of a wave of live-action DC Comics projects. Other DC heroes heading to the streaming service include “Batgirl,” “Blue Beetle,” “Green Lantern,” “Zatana,” and more.
