Cannes 2023: Wes Anderson, Jonathan Glazer, Todd Haynes To Debut New Films

After a stellar 2022 edition, the Cannes Film Festival is gearing up for its 76th edition next month. Today, Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, revealed most of the In Competition, Un Certain Regard, and Out of Competition slates. Cinephiles should be excited as new films from Wes Anderson, Jonathan Glazer, Steve McQueen, and Todd Haynes, among others, are set to make their debut on la Croisette.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Maïwenn‘s “Jeanne du Barry” will open the festival on Tuesday, May 16. Other films previously announced include Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” which will both screen at the festival out of competition. Pedro Almodóvar will also return with his second English language short, “Strange Way of Life,” starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.

This year’s competition lineup features 19 titles and includes Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days” (one of two films he’ll debut at the festival) Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” Jonathan Glazer‘s highly anticipated “Zone of Interest,” Todd Haynes’ “May December” with Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, Nanni Moretti’s “Il Sol Dell’Avvenire,” Jessica Hausner’s “Club Zero” with Mia Wasikowska, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Monster,” Catherine Breillat’s “Last Summer,” Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak,” and, as expected, Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.”

In something of a surprise, the Un Certain Regard selection is down to 17 movies with two from Morocco and one from Mongolia, the nation’s first movie to screen at Cannes. Notably, Warwick Thornton’s “The New Boy” stars former jury competition president Cate Blanchett.

Additionally, as long rumored, HBO’s “The Idol” starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp will screen at least one episode out of competition. HBO has previously screened series such as “Irma Vep” and “Behind the Candelabra,” which received a theatrical release in Europe. “The Idol” will debut on the network outside of 2023 Emmy consideration this June.

This year’s jury president is Ruben Östlund who took the Palme d’Or last year for “Triangle of Sadness.” Östlund’s dark comedy was another feather in Cannes cap after it landed a Best Picture nomination and was recognized in two other categories. Two other films that debuted at Cannes in 2022, “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis,” were also Best Picture nominees.

The Director’s Fortnight and Critics’ Week selections will be revealed in the weeks ahead.

This year’s festival will run from Tuesday, May 16 through Saturday, May 27.
