‘The First Shadow’ Featurette: Go Behind-The-Scenes Of The ‘Stranger Things’ Prequel Stage Play Debuting This Month

For most people, today is just November 6. But if you’re a diehard “Stranger Things” fan, you know that today is actually Stranger Things Day. And thus, Netflix is here to give fans of the supernatural series some tasty treats, including a first look at the upcoming stage play, “The First Shadow.”

As seen in the new featurette, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” is a stage play that serves as a prequel to the massive hit series. Taking place in 1959, but still in the spooky small town of Hawkins, the play tells the story of a young Henry Creel, who arrives in this town and has to start fresh. Along the way, we’re given peeks at young versions of characters we know and love, such as Bob Newby, Jim HOpper, and Joyce Maldonado. And if you’ve seen Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” you’re well aware what happens to Creel when he arrives in Hawkins.

As you might expect, The Duffer Brothers are heavily involved in the spinoff, but the most exciting aspect is the play is directed by none other than Stephen Daldry. Most people probably know him as the filmmaker behind projects such as “Billy Elliot,” “The Hours,” “The Reader,” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.” However, Daldry is also an accomplished theatre director, as well.

As of now, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” is set up with a run in London beginning this month. However, you have to assume, if things go well and this becomes a hit, The Duffer Brothers and Netflix will bring this show to other regions (and perhaps to its streaming service). You can watch the featurette below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.
