Got a Tip?

Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Is Pulled From WB’s Schedule In March & Replaced With ‘Godzilla X Kong’

Without a doubt, one of our most anticipated films of 2024 is “Mickey 17.” It’s Bong Joon Ho’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning film, “Parasite.” Not only that, the cast is led by Robert Pattinson, who doesn’t seem to do anything other than make interesting films. So yeah, March can’t come soon enough. Well, scratch that. You see, Warner Bros. apparently hates film fans and has decided to pull “Mickey 17” from the schedule and replace it with a new ‘Godzilla’ film. Ugh.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. has pulled “Mickey 17” from the studio’s release schedule in March. And instead of just leaving a vacancy on a really solid release date, WB has moved up the release of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” a couple of weeks from its April date to the newly open March 29 slot. Obviously, I was joking earlier when I said that WB hates film fans, as this move isn’t aimed at making our lives worse. Instead, the report claims that the dual strikes from last year has made post-production on Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi film take a bit more time than anticipated. So, therefore, “Mickey 17” is undated.

“Mickey 17” is a film that finds Robert Pattinson playing someone known as an “expendable,” which means he’s a disposable employee that is routinely replaced by newer clones. Except this time, Mickey doesn’t want to be replaced. Joining Pattinson in the cast are Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

You really couldn’t pick a more different film to replace “Mickey 17” on the schedule. Though it is still a genre film, no one is expecting “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” to be anything more than a silly, cgi-filled monster blockbuster that is aiming to make as much money as humanly possible from audience members who are desperate to see a big gorilla and a big lizard fight other big monsters. “Mickey 17” is a film, knowing the caliber of filmmaker Bong Joon Ho is, that will likely be in the mix for awards consideration, or at the very least, an incredibly smart, well-acted sci-fi drama.

Even though it’s undated, that isn’t some sign that WB is unhappy and will shelve “Mickey 17.” There are just too many big names involved for that. What is more likely is the studio just doesn’t want to slap another tentative date on the film and end up having to change it again. So, let’s give Director Bong all the time he needs, and let’s hope “Mickey 17” is worth the wait.
