Last summer at San Diego Comic-Con, there was official confirmation that The Russo Brothers would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to not only replace Destin Daniel Cretton on “Avengers: Doomsday“ (formerly titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” before retooling) but also “Avengers: Secret Wars.” While we try to figure out what the heroic lineup will look like, the directors are adding to the anticipation with new teases for their next two Multiverse event films.
The directing duo is out promoting their upcoming Netflix pic “The Electric State,” and revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that their next two installments will be “very radical and challenge audiences.”
“I think we’re always looking for new faces because there’s always new stories to tell. I think these movies are going to be a surprise to people — we found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us but we think very radical and I think it’s going to challenge audiences,” Joe Russo told THR on the red carpet for the premiere of “The Electric State.”
What exactly that means is still a bit of a puzzle that needs to be pieced together, however, bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as the big bad, Doctor Doom, might have something to do with it as audiences will likely be shocked to see the actor pivot from heroics to villainy after playing Iron Man for so long.
Of course, The Russos got their MCU start with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” before tackling monster superhero crossover events like “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame” before stepping away to focus on other film projects. During their run of movies, killing off major characters like Black Widow, before her solo film, and Iron Man in “Endgame” should remind fans that nobody is safe and The Russo Brothers aren’t afraid of taking big narrative swings.
What we do know is that Anthony Mackie has confirmed that Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, will be part of the new Avengers roster, and Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange is also in the mix after the actor clarified his participation. Reports have claimed that Hayley Atwell and Chris Evans will be returning as well, but Evans has been refuting his involvement when asked by the press.
Beyond that, surprises are bound to happen.
Later this year we’ll see both “Thunderbolts*” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which are both expected, alongside “Captain America: Brave New World,” to give us hints and potentially establish the events/threats leading up to “Doomsday.”
That first of two event films is scheduled to begin shooting in the coming months with a slated release for May 1, 2026.
