Got a Tip?

Sorry Dorks, There’s No Chance Of ‘Watchmen 2’ Happening

Fanboys had a collective mini-freakout when the internet buzzed yesterday that a film sequel to Zack Snyder’s overly literal adaptation of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” was in the works. However, an insider has poured cold water all over the idea telling Nikki Finke, “There is no truth to anything related to a movie sequel. Not a chance by a longshot. With regards to the comics, well, I guess anything is possible. I’ll keep my opinion to myself as to whether it’s a smart idea to do so.”

Dan DiDio, SVP/Executive Editor for DC Comics, started the buzz when he said that he was looking to get “Watchmen” sequels, prequels and spinoffs published, and was eyeing potential artists to take over as Moore (who has first right of refusal) would most likely want absolutely nothing to do with it. That of course led to nerds reminding each other that a clause for a sequel was in the language of the film contract (which is pretty standard in most tentpole projects) and a new internet rumor was born.

While we have no doubt that DiDio will probably rape Moore’s comic, one of the best selling graphic novels of all time, into a further cash cow for DC Comics, Hollywood suits would have to be suicidal to even consider revisiting the franchise for a film. While it has a lot of fanboy appeal, the film never crossed over the mainstream in a big way and was somewhat of a flop on its theatrical release. Sorry nerds, you’ll just have to live with your “Watchmen” mega-extended edition or whatever its called for now.
