A musical based on Bret Easton Ellis’ “American Psycho” is obviously in the works. You’ve probably heard about this in the fall of 2009.
If that’s not odd enough, the novel — best known for its stylish film adaptation starring Christian Bale and directed by Mary Harron — is getting a makeover with music by GAP-friendly singer songwriter Duncan Sheik (really?) and a story by “Big Love” writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
Sheik is no stranger to musicals, having won a Tony award in 2007 for “Spring Awakening” but isn’t a song-and-dance version of “American Psycho” meaningless without Phil Collins and Huey Lewis? Then again, we haven’t kept close ties on Sheik’s music in recent years (and really has anyone?) The project is in very early stages and no production timelines are yet in place. We may have to check this out just to see how off-the-wall it actually is.
