Alex Wolff Talks 'Old,' 'Pig' & The Genius Of 'Hereditary' [The Playlist Podcast]

The life of a young actor can often be unpredictable, but rarely do you have the opportunity to play a child trapped in a grown man’s body and a truffle hunter’s unwitting accomplice in hunting down his lost pig in one year. And yet, that’s what Alex Wolff found himself doing in back-to-back projects.

On this episode of The Playlist Podcast, actor Alex Wolff joins us to chat about his roles in “Old” and “Pig” – both movies dropping within a week of one another this summer. During the conversation, we talked about how “Old” director M. Night Shyamalan gets a bad rap for being dark and mysterious.

“It was one of the most creatively nourishing experiences I’ve ever had by a long shot!” Wolff said about working with the elusive director. “He’s always very raw and real and I find that is really rare, especially in a director.”

When it came to addressing the, uh, “Pig” in the room, Alex Wolff shared that he got downright emotional when he got the part.

“I read the synopsis and I said, ‘oh this sounds amazing,’ and then I saw that Nic [Cage] was in it and I was almost in tears because he was one of the reasons I started acting,” he explained.

And who could blame the guy? It’s Nicolas Cage after all.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a full conversation without looking back at “Hereditary” now that we’ve gotten some proper distance from it. In discussing the modern classic, Wolff said that he didn’t really know what he had at the time.

“At the time I thought, ‘This guy’s a genius,’ and now I think he’s really a genius,” said Wolff about filmmaker Ari Aster. “I’ve seen a million movies imitating his directorial style and trying to mirror that. I think he kind of changed the way we look at horror and changed the way we look at the nastiest parts of ourselves.”
